The Final Take at Midnight

Plays from this line

Interior, empty railway platform set, night.

Rain hammers the glass canopy.

A film slate snaps shut.

The red camera light comes alive.

You said the last train was at twelve.

I lied.

Mae stops beside a battered suitcase.

Beyond her, the prop train exhales steam and the platform clock clicks toward midnight.

That's your big scene? Three years, one funeral, and you open with "I lied"?

It got you to stop walking.

She almost turns.

An overhead announcement dissolves into static.

Victor crosses his mark too early, then catches himself.

You missed the tape.

I know.

We're still rolling.

I know.

The words are no longer in the script.

Rain runs from his hair.

Mae's anger changes shape.

When you leave through that door, I don't get another take.

So forget the mark.

Forget the line.

Just tell me whether any part of you wants me to ask you to stay.

The train bell rings.

Mae grips the suitcase until her knuckles pale.

Cut.

No one behind the camera speaks.

The rain rig keeps falling.

Mae—

I wasn't talking to them.

She lets the suitcase fall.

It strikes the platform with a hollow thud.

Ask me properly.

Stay.

Mae steps across her mark and kisses him as the platform clock reaches midnight.

That's the take.
