The Bravest Explorer's Journey to Sleep
Snow brushed softly against Mina's window. Inside, her blanket was a silver space cape, and the little lamp beside her bed glowed like a friendly moon.
Captain Mina, your ship is ready for one last journey.
Is it far?
Only as far as dreams can go.
Papa turned the wooden star on her toy rocket. It clicked, and tiny golden lights shimmered across the ceiling.
What if space is too dark?
Then we'll bring our own light.
The heater hummed. Her curtains lifted in a small warm breath, and the room became a quiet sky.
First we pass the Pillow Mountains.
Mina tucked her knees beneath the blanket.
I see them.
Then across the Sea of Sleepy Stars.
A tiny chime sounded as Papa touched the moon hanging above her bed.
I see that too.
And there—right at the edge of everything—is the bravest explorer in the whole universe.
Where?
Papa held up the little round mirror from her dresser. Mina's eyes were already half closed.
Right here.
Does she have to be brave all night?
No. At night, brave explorers rest. The stars keep watch for them.
Mina relaxed into her pillow. Outside, the winter wind softened. Papa pulled the blanket to her chin and kissed her forehead.
Goodnight, stars.
Goodnight, little explorer.
The toy rocket's lights faded one by one, until only the warm moon-lamp remained.
