Yes. Paste an AO3, FanFiction.net, or SpaceBattles link, or paste the story text. LyricWinter works out who is speaking, casts a voice for each character plus a narrator, and creates audio you can stream or download as MP3 or WAV.

Paste the AO3 link into the import box at the top of this page and choose Current chapter or Full work. Current chapter is the better start for a long fic. The import leaves out the author's notes, so read those (and leave kudos) on AO3. Sign in, click Detect Characters, check the voices, then click Generate Audio. If a work is only visible to AO3 members, copy the text from AO3 and paste it in.

A podfic is a recording of a fanfic read aloud by a fan, usually posted with the author's permission. It is a human performance, and if one exists for a fic you love, listen to it first. LyricWinter is something different: synthetic voices for your own listening, with audio that stays private unless you choose to share it.

We can't give legal advice on this. LyricWinter is built for personal listening: your stories and audio are private unless you choose to share them. Before you share audio of someone else's fic, ask the author. AO3's Terms of Service FAQ says a podfic of someone else's work can be posted only with the creator's permission.

There is no set limit. LyricWinter lists each speaking character, tries to merge names that refer to the same person, and adds a narrator for everything else. Detection is automatic and can make mistakes, so check the cast before you generate. You can swap any character's voice.
